We are very, very pleased to share a clip shot just last night at the CD release event for Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole’s brand new Mountain Apple Records release, entitled “Kaumakaiwa.” Held at Sig Zane’s bayfront retail store — turned into a Hilo style black-box theater, the invitation-only event was an intimate gathering of family and friends celebrating a special benchmark in the young Kanaka‘ole’s career.
Following an emotionally charged oli, Kaumakaiwa called upon his mother, Kekuhi Kanaka‘ole, and grandmother, Pualani Kanaka‘ole, to begin the affair with a uniquely contemporary chant/rap/song (our description, not their’s) indicative of Kaumakaiwa’s original style. Watch for an extended segment on this remarkable evening in an upcoming episode of Kama‘āina Backroads™ - broadcast in Hawai’i on Time-Warner’s OC16™, and in Nevada on Cox96™.
We’ve got a snapshot of what some are calling “the most amazing fire/light show on earth” - the current, glorious lava flows at Kalapana, we’ve got a very special kupuna story with Uncle Robert Keli’iho’omalu, and we’ll take another trip to the spectacular Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo. Here’s a peek:
We’re thrilled to let our ohana in Nevada know that Holoholo, Island Traditions, and Roads Less-Traveled can now be watched on Nevada’s premiere cable company, COX! With everything Hawaiian you can easily find in Las Vegas, now, the mix continues with Kama’aina Backroads™ on TV with COX96.
In the next episode of Kama‘āina Backroads™, we delight in sharing our recent visit with the patriarch of Hawai‘i Island’s southeastern village of Kalapana (Kaimu, actually), Uncle Robert Keli‘iho‘omalu.
His family compound, set on a kīpuka (a clear place or oasis within a lava bed where there may be vegetation), is a well-known spot out in these parts. Uncle talks story about life in days gone by, about doing chores as a kid (that sound like sustainable living in today’s terms), and about living through Pele’s awesome activities that have literally covered hundreds of homes in this very region.
Don’t miss the entire segment only on Kama‘āina Backroads™, broadcast in Hawai‘i on Time-Warner’s OC16, and in Nevada on COX96.
We’re enthralled with a deliciously relaxing private vacation home at which we’re currently guesting - called Escape2Puna - a beautifully designed home nestled high amidst tree tops of guava, ohia, and constant trade winds. We’ve got a few special elements for upcoming KBR episodes planned during our stay here, and we’re excited to share it with you.
Meanwhile, we urge you to consider this private holoholo option the next time you’re headed for Hawai‘i Island. For now, its Aloha Kakahiaka to you, and fresh brewed coffee enjoyed on the lanai with a dramatic view of the live lava action (flumes soaring 30′ into the sky) in Kalapana.

Below, this distinctly kama‘āina 1-room screened-in cottage, an ‘ohana set in the backyard tropical jungle, is included in your stay at Escape2Puna. You MUST see it to believe it.
