Sciatic nerve or ischiatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in our body that starts from the lower back which goes through the buttock till lower limb of the human body. The sciatic supplies almost the whole of the skin of the leg, the muscles of the thigh and back, and those of the foot and leg. Interestingly, this nerve is one and only longest and broad nerve in our body system. If this nerve gets inflamed then it becomes reason of pain the starting point of which is lumbar area till the buttocks. It also affects posterior side of the limbs. The nerve pain of sciatic is also commonly known as sciatica.

The disorder of spine affects the lumbar area which puts pressure on sciatic nerve as a result it becomes the reason of sciatica. The medicines which are usually used for sciatic nerve pain treatment is ibuprofen. It is a drug that is considered non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. In some cases injections of cortisone are used which produces steroids by the adrenal gland and it is injected in the epidural space near the spinal column. The cortisone injections are synthetically created and it works as an anti-inflammatory. If there is a situation of bulging disc or herniated disc in that case surgery such as laminectomy needs to be performed.

The best way of preventing pain is by avoiding sitting for longer period in bad posture. Even with the help of mild exercise the sciatic pain can be prevented.
